During my tenure the MGPO was founded and became the largest multi-specialty group practice in New England with over 3,000 employees (1,650 of whom were faculty physicians), 650,000 patient visits and 220,000 surgical procedures per year. Department Chairs reported jointly to the MGH and the MGPO.

Role
As president of the MGPO I worked in partnership with the physician CEO. I was the senior business leader. The physician leader was responsible for academic and professional issues. In 2003 I was given the additional, concurrent responsibility as a Senior Vice President at MGH.
Quality
Early advocate for Mass General focus on quality and safety.
Partnered to create physician quality incentive program.
Initiated and led service improvement program (patients and referring physicians).
Executive Sponsor for MGPO CMS demonstration project. Focused on sickest Medicare patients, achieved net savings of 7.1 %, lowered mortality 4 percentage points, decreased admissions 20%, increased MD and patient satisfaction.
Collaborated to profitably managed capitated contracts - efficiently delivering care with faculty physicians.
Board / Governance
Helped write bylaws, redesign board structure, and establish committee structure.
Co-led process to recruit new board members.
Strategic
Part of leadership team that forged highly productive physician - hospital partnership.
Created and co-led joint MGH/MGPO strategic planning process (several times).
Fiscal / Growth
Grew MGPO operating revenue from $154 M to $666 M (up 332 percent in 14 years in a market with five academic medical centers). Eliminated inherited operating losses.
Grew unrestricted net assets to $274 M.
Increased physician compensation from below 50th percentile to over 75th percentile through improved contracting, billing, and productivity. Achieved costs at 25th percentile. Developed and implemented physician compensation plans for majority of departments.
Led revenue cycle overhaul. Days in accounts receivable reduced to 37, net collection rate to over 92 percent.
Led installation of new administrative and clinical information systems.
Created and led MGH marketing department. Created internal communications function.
Partnered to create Mass General West. Operational responsibility for Mass General - North Shore.
